The University of ºÚË¿ÄÚÉäÊÓƵ – Fort Smith American Democracy Project will host Fort Smith’s newly instated Mayor George McGill as he delivers his first State of the City Address at noon Wednesday, Feb. 6, in the Reynolds Room of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center. This will be an opportunity for McGill to share his assessment of where the city is and to lay out his vision for the year ahead.

"Since becoming your mayor, I've been busy casting my eyes to our future and focusing on the year ahead. During the campaign, I pledged that I will be a transparent mayor who frequently communicates with my fellow residents," said McGill. "This State of the City Address represents a new way of talking about ourselves. We should use open and collaborative spaces like ºÚË¿ÄÚÉäÊÓƵ to articulate a positive and forward-thinking vision of our city. As I said in my inaugural address, all things are possible here in Fort Smith."

Williams Yamkam, assistant professor of political science and the chair of the ºÚË¿ÄÚÉäÊÓƵ American Democracy Project, said that this event will be an exciting moment for democracy in Fort Smith.

"This is a great opportunity for ºÚË¿ÄÚÉäÊÓƵ students and the Fort Smith community at large to hear directly from Mayor George McGill as he gives his assessment of the current state of our city and articulates his vision for the year ahead," Yamkam said. "We are excited to host this State of City Address as it will mark a novel and exciting moment for democracy in Fort Smith."
