Symphony, University Bands Bring Beautiful Music to Campus Green
The Fort Smith Symphony and the University of ˿Ƶ – Fort Smith will host Symphony on the Green this weekend, promising an unforgettable experience for music lovers and families. The Saturday, April 1, event kicks off at 3:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
"Symphony on the Green is a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together to enjoy beautiful music in one of the most beautiful settings in the state – our campus green,” said ˿Ƶ Chancellor Dr. Terisa Riley. “This event showcases some of what ˿Ƶ does best – building powerful connections, fostering the incredible talent of our students, and serving our River Valley community.”
At 3:30 the ˿Ƶ Jazz Band and the ˿Ƶ Jazz Catz will kick off the afternoon. Then the Fort Smith Symphony will take the stage at 5 p.m., performing a repertoire of Fort Smith favorites, including scores from Star Wars, Top Gun, and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone; Nirvana’s rock and roll classic Smells Like Teen Spirit, performed by Jolt Electric String Quartet; and traditional symphonic works.
Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and picnic baskets to the event. Throughout the afternoon lawn games will be on the green, and the ˿Ƶ Lion's Den will serve meals and snacks.
Saturday’s weather is expected to be sunny and clear, with temperatures in the upper 60’s.
“The orchestra and I are excited to bring such fun and exciting music to the River Valley,” said John Jeter, Music Director of the Fort Smith Symphony. “Partnering with ˿Ƶ to bring this free concert to the campus green is a wonderful way to engage our community with live orchestral music from popular classics to Broadway and film scores.”
