Alumni Office Hosts Self Leadership Seminar

Written By: Samantha Contreras

The University of ˿Ƶ – Fort Smith Office of Alumni Engagement in partnership with the ˿Ƶ Center for Business and Professional Development will host a professional development workshop titled “Self-Leadership,” on Thursday, Jan. 13 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Center for Economic Development at the Bakery District in downtown Fort Smith. The event is sponsored by Chambers Bank.

“The Office of Alumni Engagement has been excited to partner with the ˿Ƶ Center for Business and Professional Development on this four-event series this year,” said Jasmine Smith, Jasmine Smith, director of Alumni Engagement & Annual Giving at ˿Ƶ. “We strive to be a resource for our alumni and offer valuable events and services at no cost.”

The goal for the program is to help individuals gain self-leadership by taking on responsibility, setting direction in life, and having tools to manage priorities. Self-leaders work at all levels of an organization and are the front-line workers in every possible role, middle managers, and CEOs.

“Self-leadership requires a commitment from individuals to decide what they want from life and to do what’s necessary to get the results they want,” said Smith. “This workshop will help participants internalize self-leadership and to make meaningful, empowered choices while taking action to get where they want to go.”

“All human beings are self-leaders; however, not all self-leaders are effective at self-leading,” said Kendall Ross, Director of the ˿Ƶ Center for Economic Development. “The good news is that self-leaders can become better at leading themselves. I expect our guests to leave with a better understanding of how to develop their mindset in the areas of intention, self-awareness, self-confidence, and self-efficacy. Self-leadership is the answer to how do we develop ourselves to not only survive, but ultimately thrive in a volatile, sometimes uncertain, chaotic, and ambiguous world.”

The Center for Economic Development is a one-of-a-kind center offering a comprehensive slate of offerings for all stages of business and personal development through the ˿Ƶ Small Business & Technology Development Center, the Family Enterprise Center, and The Center for Business and Professional Development. "We aspire to be, not only a regional center of excellence, but ultimately the University’s goal is for this to be a national center of excellence,” said Ross.
